Are you feeling pressured to figure out your life? The more time that goes by, the harder it gets. A conversation with my teenage daughter, Brooklyn prompted this post. She graduated high school last year and is in her first year of college. Many of her friends stayed behind for an extra year of high school. Others took a year off to work. There is so much pressure on these young adults. They are pressured to figure out their entire lives and career in a short period of time. What programs will they apply for? Which courses will they take? They are so afraid to make the wrong choice. They are afraid to fail and afraid to disappoint others.
How is this any different from when we are grown adults? So many of us are still trying to figure out what we are going to do when we “grow up” and this is decades after high school! We may have thought we figured out which path we wanted to take, only to change our minds who knows how many times?!? You start to feel a sense of urgency to get your life on the right track. I tried to teach my daughter this, to relieve some of the pressure. The older you get the more pressured you feel. As you reach middle age, you start to reflect on your life. The more years that go by, the harder it is to explain to your family and friends. There is no need to feel pressured. Life is about growing and evolving. Trust that you are exactly where you are supposed to be at this moment in time.
DO WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY
All you can do is what makes you happy and the rest of your life will fall into place. In the meantime, you will be having a lot of fun.
DO THE BEST YOU CAN
Even if you feel that you have made a wrong choice, it is important to do the best that you can in whatever it is you do. Nothing is a waste and you will most likely use this skill in the future. It all ties into the future and makes sense in the end.
PRESSURED TO PLEASE
Whatever you do… do not feel pressured to please your parents, your friends or anyone. This will only come back to haunt you later in life. It is your life and you need to do what you feel is right. Understand and accept the fact that it may change as your life evolves.
PRESSURED TO CHOOSE
Sometimes the pressure is good. It may force you to make a decision and take action. It can push your forward in life. Make sure that it is a choice that you feel is right at the time. The rest will work itself out.
It is natural to wonder if you are doing the right thing and second guess yourself. Stressing out about it, putting pressure on yourself and feeling like a disappointment or failure doesn’t help you. It also doesn’t get you there any faster. Following your heart and your inner voice should guide you in the right direction. If you are still having trouble figuring it out, then do the best you can with the decisions you have made. This will present your best self to the world and help lead you in the direction you are meant to go. Trust and respect the process of the divine unfolding of your life.
